Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani directed Mian Gul Akbar Zeb, High Commissioner Designate of Pakistan to Canada to work for further strengthening of the political and diplomatic relations between the two countries with particular focus on invigorating bilateral trade and economic ties. The latter had called on him before proceeding to Canada to assume charge of his post, at the Prime Minister’s House this afternoon.
While noting that there was a large expatriate Pakistani community of around 350,000 in Canada, the Prime Minister asked the High Commissioner Designate that the High Commission should redouble its efforts to ensure the welfare of Pakistanis in Canada and assist them in integration process in the multi-cultural society of that country. He urged the High Commissioner to also mobilize the members of the community for playing their role in socio-economic development of Pakistan.
The Prime Minister also met Dr Nisar A. Chaudhry, President of Pakistan-American League, who has played significant role in enhancing community’s involvement for strengthening Pakistan-US relations. He apprised the Prime Minister on the views held about Pakistan by various US think tanks, media analysts and legislative and policy making arms of the US Congress and the Government. He lauded the Prime Minister’s efforts to consolidate and strengthen the democratic institutions in the country and building consensus on critical national issues like fighting militancy and terrorism.
The Prime Minister while appreciating the efforts of prominent Pakistanis in creating better understanding amongst the US opinion makers, briefed him of his government’s policies particularly with reference to strategy being planned by his government to fight the menace of terrorism. He urged that the notables and influential members of the expatriate Pakistani community should continue playing their positive role for furthering the interests of Pakistan at this critical juncture in the history of the country.
